Reading Apps for Publishers: How to Choose, Build, or License the Right Solution

Why Publishers Are Investing in Reading Apps
For most of the ebook era, publishers have relied on third-party reading platforms — Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, Google Play Books — to deliver content to readers. This approach is convenient but comes with significant trade-offs: the publisher has no direct relationship with the reader, no access to reading data, and no control over the user experience. As publishers have become more sophisticated about direct-to-consumer strategies, interest in branded reading apps has grown substantially.
A dedicated reading app allows a publisher to own the reader relationship, gather first-party data, offer subscription models, and deliver a reading experience that reflects their brand identity. The question is not whether a reading app is worth having — for many publishers, it clearly is — but which approach to building or deploying one makes the most sense.
Three Approaches to Publisher Reading Apps
Publishers typically choose between three models when it comes to reading apps.
The first is building a custom reading app from scratch. This gives maximum flexibility but requires significant investment in development, ongoing maintenance, and technical expertise. The underlying reading engine — which must handle EPUB rendering, text reflow, annotations, bookmarks, and DRM — is complex to build well. Most publishers are better served by not reinventing this wheel.
The second approach is licensing a white-label eReader app. A white-label solution provides a proven reading engine that can be branded and customised to the publisher's requirements, without the cost and risk of building from scratch. This is the approach Eden Interactive specialises in, using the Readium open-source reading engine as the foundation.
The third approach is integrating with an existing reading platform — for example, distributing through a library platform that already has its own app. This requires the least investment but also offers the least control.
What to Look for in a Reading App
Whether you are evaluating a white-label solution or assessing a platform to distribute through, the key capabilities to look for in a reading app include EPUB 3 support (including fixed-layout and complex formatting), accessibility features (screen reader compatibility, font resizing, high-contrast modes), DRM integration, offline reading capability, cross-platform support (iOS, Android, web), and annotation and bookmarking features.
For publishers considering a subscription model, the app should also support entitlement management — the ability to control which titles a subscriber can access based on their plan.
Reading Apps for Specific Sectors
Different publishing sectors have different requirements. Academic publishers distributing digital textbooks need apps that support annotation, citation, and institutional access management. Audiobook publishers need apps that handle audio playback alongside text. Charity publishers distributing resources may prioritise accessibility and low-bandwidth performance for users in areas with limited connectivity.
