Library Ebooks: Understanding Digital Library Distribution for Publishers

Why Library Distribution Matters for Publishers

Public and academic libraries represent a substantial distribution channel for publishers. Library readers are engaged, loyal, and frequently convert to purchasers — research consistently shows that library borrowing drives rather than cannibalises book sales. Understanding how the digital library market works is useful context for any publisher building a digital content strategy.

This article provides an overview of how library ebook lending works, the key platforms involved, and what publishers need to know about DRM compatibility — particularly around the LCP standard that is increasingly central to library distribution.

How Library Ebook Lending Works

Library ebook lending operates on a licensing model rather than a purchase model. Libraries do not buy ebooks outright — they license the right to lend them, typically under one of several licensing models: one-copy-one-user (a single concurrent loan per licence, similar to a physical book), metered access (a set number of loans per licence), or simultaneous access (unlimited concurrent loans at a higher price).

The lending is mediated by a library platform — a service that manages the library's catalogue, handles user authentication, delivers the ebook to the borrower's device, and enforces the loan period. The main library platforms in the UK and Europe include OverDrive (Libby), BorrowBox, and cloudLibrary. Publishers wishing to distribute through these channels typically work with a library aggregator or distributor who manages the relationship with the platforms on their behalf.

DRM in Library Distribution

Library ebook lending requires DRM to enforce loan periods and concurrent user limits. Historically, Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) was the dominant DRM system for library ebooks, but it has significant usability problems and is increasingly being replaced by LCP (Lightweight Content Protection). LCP is an open standard developed by EDRLab that provides a simpler, more user-friendly lending experience and is supported by a growing number of library platforms.

For publishers, the practical implication is that content protected with LCP is compatible with the direction the library market is moving. Publishers whose content is already delivered through LCP-enabled platforms are well-positioned as library platforms complete their transition away from Adobe DRM.

Getting Content Into Libraries

Publishers who want to distribute through library platforms typically work with a specialist library aggregator or distributor — organisations that have established relationships with the major library platforms and can handle the technical and commercial aspects of library supply. This is a specialist area of publishing services that sits outside Eden Interactive's core offering, but it is useful context for publishers building a broader digital distribution strategy.

The Relationship Between Library Distribution and Direct Channels

Library distribution and direct-to-consumer channels are complementary rather than competing strategies. Many publishers run both in parallel: distributing through library platforms for discovery and reach, while building a direct branded app for their most engaged readers who want subscription access, exclusive content, and a deeper relationship with the publisher's brand.

How Eden Interactive Can Help

Eden Interactive's Publish360 platform supports LCP DRM as standard, meaning that content delivered through our white-label apps uses the same open DRM standard that the library market is adopting. If you are building a direct digital channel for your content — ebooks, audiobooks, video, or courses — and want to ensure your DRM strategy is aligned with industry standards, we would be happy to discuss how Publish360 can support your broader content distribution goals.
