Why Ebook Conversion Matters

The quality of an ebook conversion directly affects the reader experience. A poorly converted file may have broken formatting, missing images, inaccessible content, or rendering errors that vary across different reading apps. For publishers who care about their brand and their readers, ebook conversion is not a commodity task — it requires careful attention to the source content, the target format, and the reading systems the file will be used on.

The Main Ebook Formats

Publishers working in digital distribution need to understand the main ebook formats and when each is appropriate.

EPUB is the global open standard for ebooks, used by virtually all retailers and platforms outside of Amazon. EPUB 3 is the current version and supports rich media, accessibility features, and complex layouts. It is the format publishers should be producing for all non-Kindle distribution.

MOBI / KFX is Amazon's proprietary format for Kindle devices and apps. Publishers distributing through Kindle Direct Publishing submit their files in EPUB or Word format, and Amazon handles the conversion to its internal format. Publishers do not typically need to produce MOBI files directly.

PDF is a fixed-layout format that preserves the exact visual design of the page. It is widely used for professional and academic content where layout precision matters, but it lacks the accessibility and adaptability features of EPUB 3 and is not well-suited to reading on small screens.

Conversion Workflows

The conversion workflow depends on the source format of the content. Content originating in Microsoft Word or InDesign follows different paths to EPUB.

Word-to-EPUB conversion can be handled by tools such as Calibre (open source), Pandoc (open source), or commercial services. The quality of the output depends heavily on how consistently the source document uses styles — documents with inconsistent formatting will produce poor EPUB output regardless of the tool used.

InDesign-to-EPUB conversion uses Adobe's built-in export functionality, which has improved significantly in recent versions. For complex layouts, fixed-layout EPUB export from InDesign can produce high-quality results, though reflowable export often requires post-processing to clean up the output.

Quality Assurance for Ebook Files

Every EPUB file should be validated before distribution. The EPUB Checker (EPUBCheck) is the standard validation tool, checking files against the EPUB specification and flagging errors that may cause rendering problems. Accessibility validation tools such as Ace by DAISY check files against the EPUB Accessibility specification.

Beyond automated validation, manual testing on representative reading systems — at minimum, a major iOS reading app, a major Android reading app, and a web reader — is essential for catching rendering issues that validators do not detect.
