The Audiobook Market: A Publisher's Opportunity

Audiobook sales have grown consistently for over a decade, and the format now represents a significant and still-expanding segment of the publishing market. For publishers who have not yet developed a systematic approach to audio distribution, the opportunity is substantial — but so is the complexity.

The audiobook distribution landscape is fragmented, dominated by a small number of large players, and evolving rapidly. Publishers who understand their options are better positioned to build an audio strategy that maximises revenue and reader reach without surrendering too much control.

The Main Audiobook Distribution Channels

Audible / Amazon

Audible dominates the English-language audiobook market with an estimated 40–50% share. Distribution through Audible is essentially mandatory for publishers seeking broad reach, but it comes with significant trade-offs. ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange), Amazon's production and distribution platform, offers exclusivity deals that pay higher royalties in exchange for locking titles to the Audible/Amazon ecosystem for a defined period. Non-exclusive distribution through ACX pays lower royalties but allows simultaneous distribution elsewhere.

Findaway Voices / Spotify

Findaway Voices — now owned by Spotify — is the leading non-exclusive audiobook distributor, placing titles across a wide network of retailers and library platforms including Apple Books, Google Play, Kobo, Libro.fm, and OverDrive. For publishers who want broad distribution without Audible exclusivity, Findaway is typically the first choice.

Apple Books

Apple Books has invested significantly in audiobooks and represents a meaningful secondary market, particularly for publishers whose audience skews toward iOS users. Direct distribution through Apple Books requires an Apple ID and acceptance into the Books Partner Programme.

Library Platforms

OverDrive (now Libby), Bibliotheca, and BorrowBox are the dominant library audiobook platforms. Library distribution is increasingly important for publishers, both as a revenue stream and as a discovery channel — readers who encounter titles through libraries frequently go on to purchase.

Direct Distribution

An increasing number of publishers are exploring direct audiobook distribution through their own apps or websites, using platforms like Bookfunnel or building branded listening apps. This approach offers the highest margins and the most direct reader relationship, but requires investment in technology and marketing.

Key Decisions for Publishers

Exclusive vs. Non-Exclusive

The exclusivity question is central to any audiobook distribution strategy. Audible exclusivity offers higher royalties and prominent placement, but locks titles out of a growing non-Audible market. For most publishers, a non-exclusive strategy — distributing through Audible alongside other platforms — is the more sustainable long-term approach, even if it means lower per-unit royalties from Audible.

Aggregator vs. Direct

Using an aggregator like Findaway simplifies distribution management significantly, at the cost of an additional commission layer. Publishers with the resources to manage retailer relationships directly may prefer to distribute to major platforms individually, but for most independent publishers, an aggregator offers the better trade-off.

Building a Direct Channel

Publishers with a loyal audience — particularly in niche sectors like faith, education, or specialist trade — should seriously consider building a direct audio distribution channel alongside their retail presence. A branded listening app allows publishers to offer subscription access, exclusive content, and a direct reader relationship that no retail platform can provide.
